God is toch soeverein?

Welnu. Over trots gesproken.

Rev. If something is twisted and stays twisted then this can be true of science or religion. Nothing is ever that black and white. I just read that 117 Russians are in the hospital from drinking Holy Water. If the water is magically pure then they should be fine. But whatever contagions in the water will still be corrupt. Water remains water. These things are concepts thought up by human brains. Nature has no morality.” Chris was sure Christianity is not according to reality, and this was his belief. Here is my reply to him:
“Both religion and science can be corrupted. Both are corrupted, and this is not a surprise. All that is valuable will be corrupted. But the question is, with the example of those Russians who suffered from drinking water, is this situation the result of a corruption that is in the core of the faith or from something that got twisted far from that core?' Your reaction, however, has something which is way more important to answer before I deal with this question.

Nature
This is what you said, Chris: ‘These things (you mean the question of the holiness of the water) are thought up by human brains. Nature has no morality.’ That nature has no morality is certainly possible, I won't try to deny that. The problem is that the only thing we know from nature is about that nature in its present state. We can see that nature is declining, genetics and the study of the galaxies, for example, give strong evidence for that, but we have no idea how that nature looked like before it fell. Neither do we have any idea how it will look like when it reaches point zero. We don't know how it fell, by what forces it was brought to fall and even if there are any powers beyond nature, which we call supernatural powers. About those there is nothing we can say from our knowledge about nature, because these powers would be supernatural. And if we would find out something about those supernatural powers, like that they would not exist, than we do not know whether they are true or not, as our rationality, from a naturalistic viewpoint, is based on irrational processes. That is the difficulty we face when we are discussing this very subject. As a naturalist you say: "Nature has no morality," which proves you a naturalist, while you are, from naturalism unable to verify your words. Your words are the result of irrational processes, not the result of logic. I am a christian, so my words are certainly not based on irrational processes, but on faith. The research I do can be true or not, but at least it would be based on the evidence, and not on merely irrational chemical processes, indeed without morality.
"These things are concepts thought up by human brains," you said. You could also have said: "These things are based on chemical processes. It certainly could disqualify the truth of the thing. But so does it disqualify each other's brain activity, it would disqualify all science and philosophy. You cannot say that this knowledge would disqualify only certain parts of this brain activity, like religion. There are probably hundreds of ways to disqualify religion, but naturalism is not among them, as a disqualification of religion from naturalism would disqualify naturalism as a whole as well. Also the naturalistic believe that nature has no morality appears wrongly to me. As humans we know about morals, but we also know morals. Morals that are certainly not derived from nature itself. Morals derived from nature are rather 'survival of the fittest', then goodness or care for widows. True morals cannot be natural, so without a super naturalistic believe there is no possible morality. That is a bit a different discussion, so I keep it here, and head to the first question.
Miracles
'Is this situation result of a corruption that is in the core of the faith or from something that got twisted far from that core?' That was the question that's needed to be answered, and I believe we now have the right ground to answer this question. We know that most situations apply to, what we call, the laws of nature. When a event does not apply to the laws of nature it is called a supernatural event or a miracle. We know from situations that water was turned into wine or that water could do a healing work. The people of that time where well aware of the laws of nature (though they may not have called it like this), if they weren't aware of that they wouldn't have called it a miracle. As long as you don't know the natural you can never distinguish the natural from the supernatural. Miracles do exist. But those situations differ from this very situation. The one who said this water was holy did not risk anything by telling others it was so. But those who were drinking of it took that risk. All the miracles where verifiable, and all have been verified. This account was not verifiable, because there is no outer change only if the water is holy. If it had been healing it would be different, as a doctor can easily check that. So, I would certainly distrust someone who told me that some water would be holy, and I would surely be suspicious to someone who told me I could drink as much from the water as I wanted. A miracle can be a timely change of the natures course, but certainly not a permanent change of all its laws. And I know when I drink too much water, that I put my health to risk, instead of that I would receive a better health. I am sure this faith was twisted. And I do know where it got twisted in the last place: at their preacher, as they took his word for it that this water would be good. Secondly, it might have been twisted before when they (did not) learn how to mark the real miracles, and to keep away from the fake ones. Where we can put the exact mark for the twist I cannot say. But I know the bible itself gives us clear information we can use to distinguish real and fake miracles.”

source

De mens is filosoof

Grondmotief

Lewis zegt: "What we learn from experience depends on the kind of philosophy we bring to experience. It is therefor useless to appeal to experience before we have settled, as well as we can, the philosophical question." (C.S. Lewis, Miracles, 1947, 9e druk, pagina 7)

Lewis zegt: "What we learn from experience depends on the kind of philosophy we bring to experience. It is therefor useless to appeal to experience before we have settled, as well as we can, the philosophical question." (C.S. Lewis, Miracles, 1947, 9e druk, pagina 7)

'Potje'
No big deal?

Werkelijkheid is per definitie positief.

Active on Hubpages

the free and independent press paradise

so that the priests.... 3 in het Nederlands vanaf nu

Henry moet even nadenken.

Dutch / Nederlands

Dutch Hermit has decided to wrote not only in English, but also in Dutch. I shouldn't trust anyone. Trust, so he said, does not come forth out of the mind, not out of the "vernunft" as it is taught by the great German philosophers, and trust will be broken. I believed him, though I did not understand him. And I couldn't give it a place inside me. I shouldn't trust, he said, but the only one I really trusted was him. I still remember. The teacher, for now I will call him Aristofanus, though it is not his real name, taught me from the books about the thoughts of the four philosophers. I read with him from Kant and Hegel, and from Plato and Augustine. "But," he said, "Augustine isn't a real philosopher, as he is a believer. Augustine spoke to me about truth. Plato and Kant and also Hegel did the same. And I asked my teacher why Augustine couldn't be a philosopher. His writings seemed more right to me than any of the others. Aristofanus answered me: "The opinion of Augustine is subjective and not scientific." What I learned from this dialogue with my teacher is that truth is merely the result of a subjective judgement.

Kant and Augustine

Click edit above to add content to this empty capsule.

Neither Plato, nor Kant or Hegel are scientific. All are subjective. But they are not considered christian. Kant, though, was a professing christian. Philosophers greater than Hegel where christian too. Kierkegaard of course, but Pascal for example too. Kant en Hegel only build fundaments for enlightment. A writing from Kant, answering the question: "Was ist Aufklärung?" (what is enlightment?), is considered as one of the fundamental writings on enlightment. Because of this achievements Kant is rather seen as a modern philosopher than a christian philosopher. Well, he was both. Augustine was clearly a christian philosopher. All his writings where drenched in christianity. That was Philosophy for him. Alike Justin the Martyr his opinion is that christian philosophy is the only true philosophy. That's why he spoke of truth so much. If christianity is true philosophy it needs to have a foundation of truth. That foundation of truth was found in the writings of the early christians and the Jewish Tanakh, which is later called Old Testament by the christians.

According to these philosophers there was a right philosophy in the early beginnings. But people who did not understand the philosophy well started to follow the philosopher instead of the one right philosophy. In this way the philosophy became perverted. With christianity the right philosophy was restored. Though the truth of christianity can still be doubted, their analysis in general human concepts appears right to me. When I try to convince someone of a certain thing I appear to be misunderstood, my words are changed slightly, and things I say are taken personally. That has to do with my inability to choose my words well, and to debate with only the right arguments, but it also has to do with the general human inability to follow that one right philosophy. It just seems to be too hard to fully understand once words without their own, not fully right interpretation. So, Augustine did believe that only through revelation through the bible one could come back to that one true philosophy. Kant was different. He split up truth in two ways. Philosophical truth could only be derived from the pure philosophers mind. Without ever leaving Königsberg, he thought (and taught) he could come to a general concept of truth. But also did he believe that trough science, and therefore experience, one could get evidence for the truth that is measurable through science. By only the mind one could find out truth, trough evidence it could be proved. That isn't a very scientific viewpoint.
Am I trying to prove that Augustine is a true scientist? No. He wasn't. But unlike Plato and alike he has written quite some about experience. And obviously, his writings have grown old, but are not less relevant for the liberal today. His judgements on the present state of society are the same as those of 1700 years ago. They society is nonetheless still the same. He might eventually be right. But they say: he can not really be a philosopher, because he is a christian. I believe that his christian ideas are not welcome in an enlightened world. But the world really didn't change. His christianity does not make his judgements weaker, but only stronger.

life and death

I've been ignoring the headache I have already for all day. I've tried to think of something, but this damn headache keeps me from staying focussed. It doesn't matter. This thing I've been thinking of is a matter of life and death. In fact I was questioning life and death and meaning of both. So I filled my time with thinking about and I couldn't get an satisfying answer. Not just the answer wasn't satisfactory, but I couldn't get the arguments to stand. When I questioned the arguments they started to walk in circles. Some of you might not understand how annoying this is. Life has no meaning if no one sees it, and when your dead no one sees the life anymore. When you are dead all the life you've lived is without reason. So, there is neither reason in life, nor in death. I was trying to find a reason for the things that are, but I couldn't find it. I already had a headache, but it only got worst now.

You know what helped me? For hours I had not left my place before my desk. I had looked up some philosophic ideas and even checked what my friend 'The Hermit' thought about this. He talked some about the things C.S. Lewis wrote about this. So, I looked up C.S. Lewis. He said some nice things about it. But my headache remained. He said some good things, but he couldn't say about it what I needed. Than my daughter Zoë walked in. No, she came bouncing in, she climbed like a monkey on me and she made me totally crazy. I wanted to get mad on her. But I couldn't. She's 6. Six year old girls do things like this. How could I get mad? So I grin at her and hold her upside down, which makes her laugh. I cannot be angry, neither can I remain with this question about meaning. Why bother myself with that question. The thing that is much more important is my little princess. She is the meaning of my life. She is the bright star in me. She is more than anything. Of course, together with the wife I love.

I am still working to figure out the meaning of life and death. My work on this isn't done yet, it will continue and might be the most important subject to work on for the next years. But even if I won't get an answer, I probably won't, I at least know the things that are important here and now. Zoë knows this, so much better than I do. So, have I found the answer than? Is life about happiness, family, love? Is life about the here and now? Is that the truth. Is that the preferred philosophy? Can we achieve wisdom and fulfilment simply by enjoying and being satisfied? Our struggle and our daily pains are just about that? No, not at all. Each person strifes to something differeint. Each person is unique in it's struggle to get what he or she wants. Some want to enjoy the simple things in life like love and family. Others just desire wisdom, a desire so strong that it burns them if they don't seek it. Apparently there are desires laid in the hearts of every men. Where does this desire come from? And how should we react on these desires? Questions that remain and need an answer, as love and family is not all that there is. What would I do if my only love would die? Would I die too? Or would I live, still, with the desires in my heart?

too long

- too long have I cowered, I have become a slave, of my own thoughts, I must conquer myself -
'Sympathy, from the album Anagogic Tyranny - song: Insurrection'

Not sure if I can quote this without legal effects, I for now decided just to do it without asking permission. I think they'll forgive me.

I am not elitarian in the normal use of this word. I am neither rich nor highly educated. But on some way I am part of another intellectual elite, which is some kind of a philosohpical elite. I enclose myself from the things the other elites of this world like and crown myself as king of my own thoughts and wisdom. While other elites and also the pulp, those who are not part of the elite but are simply working class try to get fullfillment in their lifes I scoff at them, I know that there is no fullfillment to be found in the way they live. So, I am an intelectual jerk. It makes me proud and arrogant. Because I am a philosopher, I am seeking wisdom because I love wisdom. I desire wisdom so much. I know I haven't found it yet, only a trace of it. This trace is enough for me to make me desire all of it, but I have found only a trace. Just like those who desire love, who desire money, who desire status. Who desires hasn't found it yet.

Now, as my death is neigh I must rethink. I have thought about wisdom before on this blog, which you can find here, now I must rethink it. Because why would I think that I, saying about myself that I haven't found wisdom yet, would now more wisdom than plain people, that life, that enjoys their meals and enjoys the things they have. People that think of fullfillment in children, in a happy marriage, in their daily work, in their divorces and their fights, in their daily struggle to achieve more than the other and in pleasuring themselves. Who am I to deny them on that? What is wisdom more than just have pleasure in the things you do? Death is close enough, there is no need to rethink it over and over again in order to receive more knowledge about it. Rethinking death could cause that you don't enjoy life anymore. So I was thinking about the things could relieve my heart from this burden of death upon it, and in which I could lust myself in this life. I said to myself that the things I loved would deliver me from my ferar from death. I had to enjoy the things of pleasure, like the food I eat, and the friends of my youth. And I sought pleasure in it, but I didn't find it. So I talked to you, Martijn, Akio is your name too, and when I talked to you my mind changed. Wisdom is about bearing fruits for the God. I find pleasure in the things in which God finds pleasure. My lust was fullfilled fully in the law of God, which requires me to love God and my neighbour and which requires to put righteousness before the holy shabbath.

I have studyied on the old Tanakh, to find out more of Gods' law. I sought God in it, but strangely enough I found multiple Gods. You know the story, Martijn, and I won't bother you with it now. This brought me to the theory that Jesus would be God also and I adopted the books that are called the new testament. I found truth and I found truth in my thoughts. But now it gets hard. I know you have been going to a church where people said that believing in God can and will be troubled by the mind. I went to the same church, and I still do. But I do not think so. I think the mind is crucial to know about God. But now I had a doubt concerning my mind. If I wouldn't find truth in my thoughts concerning the faith of the bible, would I believe it then just because of the truth in the bible, or would my thoughts conquer the truth of the bible? Am I a slave of my own thoughts or have I brought into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ? Asking all this questions I was wondering if I still was a philosopher. Maybe I couldn't stay philosopher if I denied the fruits of philosophy as good fruits. Which I did on this moment. I decided that it wasn't really that important. It is good now. My thoughts are not mine anymore. They won't keep me hostage anymore. I am dead to the whole wide world (Megadeth - Sleepwalker).

No more will I fear death.
I am alive now, more than ever.
Even though I lay down in my grave,
my breath has left my body turned to dust,
Thine life is with me.

Oh, God. Please be my guide and my strength,
please be the one in whom I find lust.
I pray to Thee, give me life today Lord.
Throught Thee I can and will be reborn into Thy Kingdom.
Than I will be free from captivity.
Than I wil find knowledge.
Be mine today Lord, and I will be Thine.
In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Amen

Can democracy guarantee freedom of speech?

This question needs to be answered due to a assignment for school with which I’ve waited far to long. It should have been finished last term. At last, I will try to find a way to resolve this question.

Can democracy guarantee freedom of speech. I’d rather try to answer the question whether or not freedom of speech can guarantee democracy. Democracy of course is the ruling od the people. People can vote for their favoured party, and the partys together try to create a government. On a indirect way it is the people that decide the government. Freedom of speech is also freedom of press. With the freedom of speech the people of a nation can inform themselves, not just about other opinions, but also about other facts. If there is enough diversity each person can make the decision that they want.

This is theory. Democracy is a system that can only run on enough knowledge and enough interest. It can only succeed if the people are willing to take responsibility for the rule of their land. If people see government only as a tool to become rich or decide that they don't want to do anything with politics because it doesn't serve their goals it will soon be over. As long as everone lives their life, but says nothing, people can use politics only for their own good.

However, most often a democracy works. It might not really be the most perfect kind of government, but it works. Democracy is, more than any other governmental system, a system in which people cán have a choice. There are people with vision, people with leadership. People who know the value of words.

This last argument will be leading me to my conclusion. If you can choose to do right or wrong it is better then to have no choice at all. When people decide that they will use their freedom to expres democracy it will work. It's the only way.

truth

Not just Marc is studying on the subject truth. So am I. Well, we are in fact not certain that there even is a truth. There might as well be no more than just a floating thought, a thought that is, that was but that has never been. Something such as the thing I just tried to catch in words. Truth evidently is a mystery to us, a mystery that will not easily be solved. The most interesting question is how you can possibly proof truth. Now the existence of a truth is in fact only assumed. This assumption is the thing that modern science is based on at first. Modern science is based on some other little things. There is some point where, being consistent, nothing that is is truth. If we ask the question what there was before the big bang is the same damn question as the question what there was before God. It can't be answered, it can not even be tried. How the things came into existence. We don't know. There are many more things that we are not certain of. As we are consistent we must believe it all is a lie. There is a evolution theory. This theory shows that through genetic mutations all animals have changed their entire form. From evolution all the species arose. There is a thing only that is necessary for this theory. This thing is that with mutations it would have to be possible that information would be added. Genetic, however, learn us that with not even a single mutation information was added. Each mutation seems to be responsible for a loss of information. There was said that science could explain all things. What we see however is that the many things that cannot be explained by scientist are ignored completely by them. What to believe?

There are many things today that we do not understand. It causes us to rethink whether we believe all problems can be solved or not. It cause us to rethink our entire philosophy. We need to question if there is a truth or not. I started to think whether there is a truth or not. The movie "The Matrix" has had a large part in this. The question I asked is how we can be sure if there is a truth. I was thinking about this subject lately and I foud out that the things that we believe to be true have clear boundaries. I found this out when I was consistently questioning all truth. I found out that I thought that I was laying on the beach, in this case, but it might be that I did not lay on the beach. It might as well have been a phantasy. It might even be a phantasy that I thought that I was laying on the beach. It all could simply be phantasy. Everything. Everything?

I decided for myself that, if it all was phantasy it was not real. In other words, everything that is phantsy is no truth and the other way around. Where phantasy starts reality stops. There is a boundary that both can not pass. When you got a cup of coffee on a morning you might try to catch something through that cup. It won't work. There is a boundary, which is in this occasion the cup. You know that there is a cup because you cannot grap through it. You might say: I know that there is a cup because I can see the cup. I believe that might be a true argument. But as we look at situations in the past it might be that our own senses are little disturbing. Science though is based on the proposition that there is a truth that can be known by experience, by our own senses. If, well, experience, would be a illusion there would be no science possible.

I decided that through boundaries we can find out know about truth. I also realised that it is only a knowledge of truth from the outside. We know that truth ends somewhere because we know that the boundary of truth is where phantasy starts. But I do not know what the truth is. It must be there, and by defining the boundaries of phantasy I can partly define the boundaries of truth. But I cannot by any means define the meaning of that truth by the knowledge that I've gained right now. It is certain that there is a truth, somewhere. As I started to try to find this truth I realised that this means that I must be a philosopher. If I wouldn't be I would never submit myself to such a lifework. I started to think about a question. Which thing is true? I thought, maybe it might be possible simply to find out the things that are the true and the things that are not true. I believe this is called the scientific method. With the scientific method the explanation which is the most simple is used and tried to be proven. Well, with my method I would try to just make a shift between the things that are true and the things that are phantasy. A shift between the things that are ideas and the things that are reality.

It didn't really work out that way. It appeared to be impossible to proof. Anyway, if I would just make a simple shift it would be only arbitrary to do so. But it annoys me that there would be a truth, which I believe is evidently there, and I wouldn't be able to find out what the truth is. If I don't know the truth I will have to base my decision on something else than truth. I would assume things to be true. But I wouldn't know. So, I remanined with the question how I could know the substance of the truth. It is a tought question. I'll need a little more time to rethink some. The first thing I will do is to define the boundaries of truth and phantasy. This will be a tough assignment in itself. If I am able to accomplish this, at least partly I will try to summarize the content of truth. This is a very tough question. I know that many scientists, philosophers, theologians and others have strived to know the content of truth. They couldn't accomplish it. I won't either. However, I might make a start from another viewpoint and try to find answers on some specific questions.

so that the priest....

I had asked to whom Abraham was talking in Genesis 17. Henry thinks that God Himself is talking to Abraham here. "God is showing some of His power here, but not Gods shape. God calls to live life in a manner that God can actually like it. This verse does not proof that God came to Abraham 'in the flesh.'" Even though I believe that this interpretation is to loose compared to the actual text I can understand his thoughts: Gods is showing Himself to Abraham and Abraham drops on his face. The place of God isn't literally defined, so this passage can be interpreted on a 'spiritual' way. This would indeed mean that God shows His strength or signs to Abraham. However, in chapter 18 this would be rather difficult. "Who does Abraham see in Genesis 18?" I interrupt Henry. "God the Creator Himself of course," he answers again. I am wondering, however, how Henry could defend this viewpoint, so I cite this passage before him: "And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day; And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground, And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant." I explained this passage this way: "The Lord, in Hebrew: Elohim, appeared here to Abraham. He saw three men. I wonder how God can show up when he can;t be seen. How can this happen?" I ask Henry. He doesn't give an answer, so I move on.

"God shows up and Abraham sees Him. Abraham bows down 'before him.' How can Abraham bow before God after God appeared to him? I believe this cannot be interpreted on a symbolic manner. In verse 8 it even states that God ate. That is obviously against the tradition, as a spirit cannot eat. God is spirit (John 4,24)." Henry agrees that a spirit cannot eat. "In the gospel of Luke I can clearly see the thought that a spirit cannot eat (Luke 24:39-43). This thought appears rightly to me. I believe therefore that it where the angels that ate on this occasion." I did not agree with this explanation. "In Judges 13 an angel of God is offered food, but he refuses it. The food offered is better being used as a sacrifice to God. The angels would eat and God would not? That seems strange to me. There is a prominent thing in this passage. It seems like angel and God are used random here. Henry agrees. "I believe that when an angels speaks it is in fact God who speaks through the angel. The angels is no more than a medium." I answer Henry: I'd like to discuss this on a later moment, for now however I want to discuss Abraham first." Henry: That's al right."

"After eating Abraham walked together with the angels and God. I believe this must be taken literally. I do so because the other two falked further to Sodom(19,1) en God stands together with Abraham. After they talked the Lord God ent from Abraham. For me this appears to be strictly physical." Henry: As you say it there is something that makes some sense. However, I cannot understand how you can solve the problem that God is spirit (John 4,24) en no human (Hosea 10:9)" I wasn't yet finished with the explanation of the physical appeaeance of God on some occasions. I wanted to go by those first. I'm not sure Henry would agree, so I asked him.

Atheïsm

The last years since I am living in Holland I have seen how many different religions and 'philosophies' have spread their disease in a, for me, shocking amount. There is a blend of many overlapping truths,' there is no longer a truth. Many people cannot be longer confident about science, and the atheistic truth is no longer the key philosophy these days.

Somehow it shocks me when I see the demise of this very society. I know, speaking directly to you, Hermit, that you do not believe in the atheistic principle which I present. But just as I do you believe that there is one truth and that other truths' are no truth at all. You are busy with finding answers about how the God, in which you believe, can be proven, you are seeking answers about truth and philosophy. I even want to use your viewpoint: 'Those who desire wisdom (Philo-Sophy which means love for wisdom) have not yet gained it. Those who desire truth haven't gained it either.' You are in fact calling yourself philosopher, which means, in your theory that you haven't found it yet. You say this yourself often also. I won't attack you for it, there is no sectret or so. The point that I am trying to make is that you do not believe that any philosopher ever has found the wisdom in it's entire, only little parts have been found. The same idea you seem to express when it comes to truth.

I am sure that you have your reasons for this proposition. It is not so important really whether we know all the truth, but there are some truths' that need no proof because they are in the essence clear to anyone. Some of these are the following: Black is not white, 1 is not 0. These things are not only clear to anyone, they are also essential as a fundament for all things to be certain of it. These are the things that are for so much certain that I find it important to convince you of this being truth. There is a truth that we all can know. There are people who have at least found out the entire essence of truth. There is a truth which many people have found out already. You haven't, but I believe you will soon. There is no God. A God that would excist in any form would be able to be, just to be. The problem with God is, there is not a God until he/she creates anything.

In not even one of the creationmyths the God was there before he/she created the world and the universe. It couldn't be because energy was the first there was. As it's said: ...In the beginning there was energy, and the energy expanded and it's mass created the things that are. Some of the things that are became life and some of the things that got life became choicefull. Choices where made and knowledge was gained. Truth was found. The truth is, all is made of energy, and energy is all. There is no God besides energy. But energy is not a God, it's just force. There are not many Gods either, there is one energy, and this energy was there before all things.

1. ...So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of God.

2 Chronicles 5:14

"As I believe the God has some properties. The bible teaches us that God is good, loving and gracious. Also do I believe that the bible teaches us that God is one (Deuteronomy 4,39 and others) and non-visible for the human eye (Exodus 33,20)." Henry agreed. "That's true. This only confirms to me that Jesus cannot be God." It is not difficult for me to follow his way of reasoning. It would certainly be mine. If Jesus is neither invisible nor almighty he cannot be God. "I must admit that Jesus was totally visible," was my reaction the Henry. "That's why he certainly cannot be God." "Exactly," Henry was happy with his certain theological victory. He had not expected that I would ever defend his viewpoint. I do so with the purpose to convince him it is wrong. That's why I continue with showing how invisible God is: "2 Chronicles 5, 13 and 14 teaches us what happens when only the glory of God enters the house of God. Not a single priest can stand and do his work. Only Gods glory is so huge that God himself can never be visible. We see the same in Exodus 40,34 and 35 and in exodus 33,20. Moses was shining when he was in the presence of God so much that he needed to wear a towel because the light was to bright for the Israeli people. But even Moses couldn't see God, if he would he would die."

"I really don't understand why you think it serves any need to confirm my viewpoint time after time," is Henry's opinion. "What is the purpose?" My answer on this comes down to one thing: "I want to show that seeing God has such an effect that it is not difficult to imagine that God is invisible, as we have seen in Exodus 33,20. It is certainly right that no man can see God?" I asked Henry. "Certainly," Henry replies. "This only confirms what I've already said before. It appears that you have come back from your error and your churchdogmatics," is his reaction. "The bible doesn't lie (Numbers 23,19)." I react quite sharply in this occasion. "I want to know if God really is the only God. It is the ultimate test whether you know the truth or not." Henry: "Surely God is the only God (Psalm 18,32). This was our conclusion before, it seems not neccesary to change this." Henry appears to get a little irritable. I think he is afraid to lose his certain victory now I am asking questions. Contrary I am starting to get irritable that he doesn't see the truth when it is right before his eyes. He has his viewpoints, but he has no doubts. There are no questions. I have questions. "Who was Abraham talking to in Genesis 17?" I cited this passage before him: "And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect."

To be continued.

A theism part 1 preface part 2

'Our next appointment was once again in Deventer, in a park near to the IJssel. I was a sunny day and there where many people around. Because this park isn't directly laying next to the IJssel there where a little less people than next to the IJssel, many people like to sit next to the water on warm days like these. On a small bench we started to talk. "You appear to have some arguments against the fact that Jesus cannot be God." Henry asked me to tell him why. "Indeed I disagree with this and I do so because it appears wrongly to me." Henry: "Why?" I had an answer for this. "Jeremia 17,5 teaches us that he who trusts on a human is cursed. When we claim that Jesus is a man out of men we bring ourselves under this curse by our denial that Jesus is truly God." Though this was the first argument that I brought up Henry thought that this was my only argument. "It tells me a lot about your faith that you use the old testament to deny the gospel." "Henry," I replied, "without the old testament the new testament has not a single foundation."

Almost all the things that Jesus said are from the old testament our directly connected to it. Dozens prophecies in the old testament are fullfiled in Jesus and the new testament. Often hundreds are mentioned. Even if it would be only fifty. Even than I believe it cannot be claimed that the new testament could excist without the old. Certainly, looking to the many times the old testament is cited in the new testament prooves to me that they are a strong unity.

Besides that, The fact that there is a new covenant prooves that there has been a old covenant. The old covenant tells us a lot about the new covenant. Looking at the length of the old testament, the Tanakh, makes me believe this part is a crucial part of the bible. This makes clear to me that the unity between the old and the new coventant cannot be broken. "Also the old testament is true," was the opinion of Henry, "but the new testament came as a substitution for the old, which was obsolete. That is why we must not focus to much on the old testament but aim our attention to the words that Jesus said." I believe myself that the new testament explains the meaning of the old and can both testament not live without each other. That is why I do not believe that we would have to keep the Torah entirely, law for law and stealing the joy that came with the law by doing so. But in our argument about the Godness of Jesus the prophecies and the history can be a remarkable help for us to understand the bible. Not so much the law itself. On the contrary Jesus claims to be the fullfilling of the law. The law learns us some about this subject too. I believe that with the fullfilling of the law Jesus thought also about the prophecies. Jesus himself talks about the law when he cites a psalm (Psalm 82,6, John 10,34). I believe that the entire Tanakh wil be prophetical and directs us to the new. That is why I would like to first investigate the old testament and ground the ideas that are availeble in it with the new testament. I told Henry about my plans and he agreed. Then I started my explanation.

A Theism part 1 Preface

This study started a while ago with doubt. This doubt was not found in a lack of knowledge, but in uncertainty about the right interpretation. This doubt was growing as some ignorant people where proclaiming that I was denying the gospel. It is this gospel that I do love so much. When I write these things here I find it important that the things which I write are looked after carefully, because I think of myself being honest and trustworthy and not spreading dogmatic error but truth. Henry now rejected me and my viewpoint even before he knew it’s content. He was proclaiming that Jesus cannot be God. Nevertheless he proclaimed also that we should honour and worship Jesus. This appeared to me to be a strange viewpoint. Shortly I had read Jeremiah 17,5: ‘Thus says Yahweh: Cursed is the man who trusts in man, and makes flesh his arm, and whose heart departs from Yahweh.’ I cited this passage before him. According to Henry it is telling a lot about my faith that I use the old testament to deny the gospel. Once again there was doubt. However, I had really been seeking the truth and I was assuming that I had gotten close towards the truth. Now I wasn’t so sure that I did not deny the gospel. So I was hoping to learn some from Henry. But he refused me.

I do believe. Also do I believe in the power of the gospel. Not because the gospel has been forced this power upon, but because it is the truth. The truth is out and from God, the God of the Tanakh, the God who has sends His word out to create the heavens and the earth. The God also of Jesus. In this sense I find out that the old and the new covenant are in fact a unity. A unity that’s been confirmed in the numerous prophecies in the old testament that are being confirmed in the new testament. Those are more than two hundred.

The teachings of the old covenant are far longer than those of the new covenant. The time it excists is also much longer. As Jesus already has said no jot nor tittle of the law will be passed before the end of this world (Matthew 5:18). In the next dialogue you will learn that the old covenant, the Tanakh (which is the entire old testament) will show us most about whether Jesus is a God or not. Even though I have redactionaly adapted the words they have the same content as the dialogue that I've had back then.

It was calm that day along the rivershore of the IJssel, next to Deventer. On many summernights many people are sitting next to this river, even until late. Not today. It had been raining and the gras was wet. I did not care. For me it was a great opportunity to seek contemplation and to be alone. I was studying there for a little while. Then a young man walked by. After a polite salute he walked further. When I was walking towards the station I met him once again. Once again I saluted and for some reason we started to talk. He told me that he had a website on which he explained the gospel. I promissed him to look after it. The same night I looked up the website. The websites design seemed pretty simple to me, but the content was very interesting. What did strike me was that Henry, which appeared to be his name, told that Jesus on no occasion could be God, but we do have to honor him. We made an appointment to talk about this any further later on. On this moment we had already discussed Jeremiah 17,5. Though I was hurt by his words, when he accused me of denying the gospel I was happy that I got the opportunity to explain my motives and my study.

About the God

My dear friends,
I'm willing to learn more about the God. I want more knowledge about Him whom I know. I nkow that there is a passage, which is in the bible that teaches us that God is so big that he will not lower himself to the level of humans. I just can't find it. It annoys me. So, If any one has any idea where I can find this passage I would be very thankfull.

In the meanwhile, I've got some good news. I've found some very interesting material in my search for knowlegde about the God. Some things are miraculous, and so is this one thing. I've been able to complete my theory about the Godness of Jesus. Most of it. I am still doubting, is there in Jesus a second God? Sometimes it seems so when I look into the bible. I'm puzzling on it. I am a human, and therefor I will not know the God in it's (His) entire essence. It is the essence of mortality. I am still studying on it. In the next days, when I have translated my study and changed into a readable piece, I will publice it in parts on this one blog.

How do I grow wise?

Together with a young friend, whom I will call 'Akio' (what is the meaning of his name) I was talking about wisdom. We both travel a lot by train and so did we this day. So, I asked him what wisdom was according to him. He said: "Honesty, that is wisdom." What is the thing that makes honesty wisdom? I was wondering, how could I proof this statement. I agreed with Akio; "I think growing in honesty is growing in wisdom." But what is a good definition of wisdom? "Honesty," Akio said, "and knowledge." So, now wisdom had grown to two meanings. So I questioned him what honesty and knowledge characterize, what makes it wise?

Around us some people, traveling together with us to Zutphen, where listening closely to what we said. Some others seemed not to be very interested. They read the paper or listened to music. But one of the listeners gave an explanation. "Honesty and knowledge are both righteous, which makes them wise." He was probably right. All righteous things probably are wise, because all wise things seem to be righteous. If the righteous things are wise and the wise things are righteous than I think I've gotten the answer that I was looking for. Akio said; "If the righteous are wise, than the evildoërs are foolish." It seemed very plausible to both me and him. I had still a little doubt. So I asked our fellow traveller what righteousness is. "Righteousness is," he said, "doing the things that are good for mankind and for our fellow humans."

It was Akio who opened his mouth at first. In his opinion neither humanity nor any human individual is the criterion, but the God. Righteousness is the act of trust towards the godhead which He likes. I, becoming curious, asked him what the God likes. "God likes honesty, worship, trust, and submission. But the thing God likes the most is having a relationship with Him." "So, the greatest of all wise things is having a relationship with Him?" I asked Akio. "Yes, he said, all these things I just mentioned are wise, and relationship is the wisest. All these forms of acting wise create wisdom."

Akio is a very smart young man. We had a discussion about philosophy and together we realised that philosophy must not be about the principles, but about all the small, the special things. It must be about the gifts of each day, because each day has enough horror and enough joy to carry. Here he made a statement that is very much alike. Wisdom is the sum of all the times that you decide not to do some evil, but to do the righteous thing. Even so righteousness is made of all these things that are liked by the God; honesty, worship, trust and submission, and at most the relation with the God.

We all know the the bible learns us in Ecclesiastes that fear of God is the beginning of all wisdom. Fear in this context is about voluntary submission, trust and worship to the God. A relationship with the God. Doing what He/She asks for. So, it is wise to submit to the God. This God is a God of righteousness. But, it is the beginning of all wisdom. But what is wisdom? What makes doing the things the God likes wise?

"God made you, so He knows what's best for you." Akio had a strong idea in his head about wisdom; "If He says someting is best for you, He'll probably be right, don't you think?" Well, I was thinking all the time, and yet, doubting. The truth is as plain as it is complex.

In the very first beginning of mankind there was only one kind of people. The Adam (bloodred ground) was a believer. So was Eve, also a believer. But God did not intent it to be so. He created also the believers above the earth, in the heavens. Between them He made a distinction that cannot be breached, He created the sky. As you read in genesis you will find that there is made some barrier between the waters, which stands for the faithfull. God also made dry ground. Dry ground stands for people who do not bare fruit. They are the unfaithfull. They take no heed of the things the God says.

People who do not take heed of those things are called fools. They do what they desire and what's righteous in their own eyes. They are righteous in their own eyes, just as we all are. Look at David, one of the greatest philosophers of all time. He was in his psalms looking to earn his right. He found himself being done injustice and called to the God to do him justice. He called to God. And he was beloved by God, so God did do him justice.

We all keep wondering how we can achieve wisdom. But who is searching for it? A tree must grow in wisdom, or it will die. A tree cannot grow without fruitfull ground and clean water. You cannot grow in wisdom when you are living on dry ground. Buth when you live near the sea or near the river you will grow in wisdom. When you live on the shore you are in touch with other faithfull, who will stop you when you do wrong. You are just so you will be done justice. You are right, so the God will do righteous to you. You are wise so the God will give you wisdom. Because the God gives you streams of overflowing wisdom.

Now tell me. What is wisdom? Akio, please tell me, what is wisdom? Isn't wisdom the food that we receive? The spiritual force that makes us grow up? Isn't it the fruit that we bear? Isn't it you? If you have received the source of wisdom you must live according to this source. You can be baptized showing that living water is your source of wisdom. Fear of God is the beginning of all wisdom. The unfaithfull bear no fruit, they cannot bear fruit. They are dead. Their wisdom is dead. Wisdom is bearing fruit in the light of the maker. Bearing fruit. "Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?"

A "plain and simple minded" man can make wisdom as he stands in the water of live. But those who refuse this allflowing water will not find it, for they do not seek.

Fasting

For the Dutch readers:
http://maxxlife-berea.blogspot.com/

It is good to fast. Not for the faint hearted, but for thos who desire. Those who desire true love, but more for those who desire to know the God more. Praising gods is easier with a full stomach and with all the desires fullfilled, but praising the God without any of these has more strength. Desiring to know the God more than now, as I have the desire for more true love and more true wisdom I have decided to stop doing useless games on the computer, this at first, and the time I used to use for that will I use in two different ways.

First I will use a part of that time to read more books and other sources of wisdom and knowledge. I will use it to gain information. I'll spend more time with friends and philosophers speaking about wisdom and trying to find out what wisdom is. I'll use the time to read things friends of mine have written.

Secondly I will use a part of the time to walk. Walking is a great thing which helps to bring order in my thoughts. And it also helps me to get contact with the God. Yes, the God is also in the house where I live, He even is in me, but being outside breaks my walls of apathy, and walking breaks my resistance against the God, because I don't get extracted by the world when I'm in the woods.

If I walk, and I do not eat, there is a starting growth towards dependancy to the God of the heavens. I do trust less on my own wisdom, which I gained only by trust on the God, and more on the God, which makes me grow in wisdom some more (hope you can still follow me). I haven't find out yet what wisdom is. I know honesty is wise, knowledge is wise, goodness is wise and most importantly, fearing the God is wise. But what is the thing that makes all these things wise? What makes that fasting is usefull to grow in wisdom?

Once before the same question was asked on this blog. What is wisdom? This is the thing that will be next on the blog. But the thing that I found out is that wisdom does not so much grown when you grown in knowledge, but more by growing in love and in relationships. Relationships, strong relationship, are often more about giving than about taking. If you have the strength to give some of your food or your time to the God, requesting only His love, you'll grow in wisdom, because you grow in love. Learning to give because you love someone makes you grow in maturity.

Today only view people fast. Little children dare to give something to receive love, but grown up people seem to think that they need no love. So they would not have to fast anymore. Fasting is good, but it is not only for yourself. If you are faint hearted, you won't do it, because you will realize that the cost is much higher than the benefit. Many do not realize that the gift they give when they fast is not a gift from their own property. They give God what already belongs to Him, and He rewards for it. Some do desire true love, and to know God more. They will not be disappointed. Fasting is a gift that keeps on giving.

Transfer or not to be

Sibon, the Dutch footballplayer has recently elongated his contract with his club FC Heerenveen. Giggs, who is playing with his club Manchester United for eighteen years now, hasn’t lost his pleasure in this club. He will stay also for another year. Both players show loyalty to their clubs. Many players a changing clubs as often as they change close. I am wondering which decision is the best.

When Klaas Jan Huntelaar changed from Ajax to FC Madrid his income grew from a little over two million to more than four million Euros. His income had already grown a lot since his departure from Heerenveen, where he earned less than a million. So, changing clubs can make the income much higher.

As a example of the other way around we can call on Hatem Trabelsi. He was one of the star players for Ajax when he debuted. He probably was on of the greatest talents. He played five years for Ajax. After he departed and went to Manchester City he never came back. Because of his weak knees no club wanted him, even though his great prestige in the time he played for Ajax. Transfering brought him nothing but trouble.

A wise decision is not easy to make. With Pilate I ask myself: What is wisdom. It is all about the principles. If the principles are that money and fame do not stink you will decide to transfer. But those who do find many things, like health, moe important than money will not easily transfer. A right answer is not easy to make and I will not without very carefull research (for which I don’t have the time right now) decide.

join me

as I read in the information, I can make others join me as authors for this website. Not sure if I will ever have some news to share. If so, that would be nice. For me, at least, I have some thoughts to share. They are probably mostly not new. Most thoughts are thought already, and most thoughts will be thought again. But I keep wondering, what if all thoughts of love and peace will never be thought again. As a dear friend of mine learned me, people do live according to what they know. If noone thinks love anymore, who would live according to it? Modern thoughts are thoughts of progress, but progress is regress often. If there is any news, to end with what I started, and people think of love and peace once again, I'll tell you.
